Integrating a FRITZ!Box into the home network via powerline

If you already have a FRITZ!Box, you can connect another FRITZ!Box to it over your home's electrical wiring, for example with FRITZ!Powerline, and configure the second FRITZ!Box so that it uses the first FRITZ!Box's internet connection (operation as an IP client).

This way devices connected to the FRITZ!Box are completely integrated into your home network. You can use these devices to access the internet as well as other devices in the home network, and they can use all of the functions offered by the FRITZ!Box connected to the internet.

Note:The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for your FRITZ!Box.

1 Configuring the FRITZ!Box

Preparations

  • Either use a network cable or wireless LAN to connect a computer to the FRITZ!Box you want to use in the home network. If the computer is already connected to the FRITZ!Box that establishes the internet connection, clear this connection.

Configuring the operating mode

  1. Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click on "Mesh Networking" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "Mesh Settings" tab.
  4. Enable the option "Mesh Repeater" in the "Mesh Operating Mode" section.
  5. Enable the option "This FRITZ!Box is a network device (IP client) in the home network [...]".
  6. Enable the option "via LAN".
  7. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

The FRITZ!Box is now configured for for operation in the home network.

Important:In this operating mode, the FRITZ!Box can no longer be reached at http://fritz.box. Instead, to access it you must use the Mesh or home network overview of the FRITZ!Box with internet access or use the IP address that is assigned to it.

2 Connecting the FRITZ!Box

Here we show you how to connect two FRITZ!Boxes over your home's electrical wiring using FRITZ!Powerline as an example:

Note:Refer to the respective manufacturer for information on setting up other powerline adapters, for example consult the manual.

  1. Plug the first FRITZ!Powerline adapter into an outlet near the FRITZ!Box with internet access.
  2. Plug the second FRITZ!Powerline adapter into an outlet near the FRITZ!Box in the home network.
    • Now the powerline connection is automatically established and the "Powerline" LEDs on both adapters remain lit.

Note:Upon delivery, the adapters from a FRITZ!Powerline set use a unique network password. You do not have to configure any additional settings before using them.

  3. Use a network cable to connect the first FRITZ!Powerline adapter to a LAN port on the FRITZ!Box with internet access.
  4. Use a network cable to connect the second FRITZ!Powerline adapter to the "WAN" port on the FRITZ!Box in the home network.
    • As soon as the "LAN" LEDs on both of the FRITZ!Powerline adapters remain lit, the connection is established.

3 Setting up Mesh

If FRITZ!OS 6.90 or later is installed on the FRITZ!Box with internet access, connect the devices to a Mesh.
