Cannot access storage (NAS) configured as a network drive

It is either not possible or no longer possible to access storage (NAS) of the FRITZ!Box that is configured as a network drive. When the computer is started or you attempt to integrate a USB device connected to the FRITZ!Box as a network drive, one of the following error messages is displayed:

  • "Invalid password or username for: \\\[...]"
  • "Enter Network Password
Enter your password to connect to:"
  • "Network error: Windows cannot access \\
Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found."
  • "Network error: Windows cannot access \\
    Error code: 0x80004005 Unspecified error"
  • "An error occurred while reconnecting [...]
Microsoft Windows Network: The network path was not found.
This connection has not been restored."

  • The path you entered, the user name and/or password is incorrect, or the user does not have the authorization to access NAS contents, or incorrect settings on the computer are preventing you from accessing the USB storage device.

Note:The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for your FRITZ!Box.

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the issue persists.

1 Setting up FRITZ!Box users

In order to access storage (NAS) contents, you need a user account with a user name and password. Set up a FRITZ!Box user in the FRITZ!Box for this purpose:

  1. Click "System" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "FRITZ!Box Users" in the "System" menu.
  3. Click the "Edit" button for the user who is to access the storage (NAS),
    • or, if you have not set up any users yet:
      • Click the "Add User" button and enter a name and password of your choice for the user in the corresponding fields.
  4. Enable the option "Access to NAS contents".
  5. Click the "Add Directory" button.
  6. Enable the option "All storage available on the FRITZ!Box" if the user should be allowed to access all storage available on the FRITZ!Box,
    • or, if the user should only be allowed to access a particular storage or folder:
      • Enable the option "Select folder".

ATTENTION!If you grant access to all folders, then the user can access all of the faxes, answering machine messages, and any online storage you may have configured.

  7. In the "Directory" section, assign the user read and write permissions to the storage.
  8. Click "OK" to save the settings.

2 Configuring login to the home network

In order to access memory (NAS) contents, password protection must be enabled for the FRITZ!Box:

  1. Click "System" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "FRITZ!Box Users" in the "System" menu.
  3. Click on the "Login to the Home Network" tab.
  4. Enable the option "Login with FRITZ!Box user name and password",
    • or, if all users are to use a shared password to access the FRITZ!Box:
      • Enable the option "Login with the FRITZ!Box password" and enter a password of your choice that will be required to access the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

3 Deleting network drives and setting them up again

Often storage (NAS) cannot be accessed because access rights for NAS contents were changed in the FRITZ!Box after the network drive was set up. Therefore, set up the network drive again:

  1. On the computer, delete any links to the storage (NAS) configured as a network drive.
  2. On the computer, set up the storage (NAS) as a network drive again.

4 Configuring the computer's firewall

  • Configure the firewall on the computer according to the manufacturer's instructions so that it allows communication using the SMB (Server Message Block) protocol.

5 Correcting the Windows network settings

The following steps are only necessary for computers with Windows:

  • Enable the following network services and clients in the network adapter settings in the "Network and Sharing Center":

Note:You can find information on enabling network services and clients in the Windows Help or contact Microsoft.

    • "Client for Microsoft Networks"
    • "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks"

Now you can access the storage (NAS) of the FRITZ!Box.

Note:If you are still not able to access the storage (NAS), the cause may be an error in a security application or in the operating system. Refer to the manufacturer of the security software or operating system for information on how to set it up, for example consult the manual.
