FRITZ!Box 7340 Service

Setting up the FRITZ!Box for use with another DSL modem

With an external ADSL or VDSL modem from another manufacturer, you can even use your FRITZ!Box if it does not support the DSL standard used on your DSL line.

Since the FRITZ!Box establishes and controls its own Internet connection over the modem, all FRITZ!Box functions (such as Internet telephony, firewall) are also available without restriction in this operating mode.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS

1 Connecting the FRITZ!Box with the modem and computer

  1. Connect the modem to your Internet connection according to the instructions provided by your Internet service provider.
  2. Use a network cable to connect the LAN port on the modem to the "LAN 1" port on the FRITZ!Box.
  3. Connect a computer to the FRITZ!Box over wireless LAN or use a network cable to connect it to an available LAN port on the FRITZ!Box.

2 Configuring the Internet connection

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Account Information" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Check whether your Internet service provider is displayed in the drop-down list. With some regional settings, not all of the preconfigured Internet providers are displayed until you select "More Internet service providers".
    • If your Internet service provider is displayed in the drop-down list:
      1. Select your Internet service provider and enter the account information you received from your Internet service provider in the corresponding fields.
      2. Click on "Change connection settings".
      3. Enable the option "Via an external modem" in the "Internet Connection" section.
    • If your Internet service provider is not displayed in the drop-down list:
      1. Select "Other Internet service provider".
      2. Enable the option "External modem or router" in the "Connect via" or "Connection" section.
      3. Enable the option "Establish own connection to the Internet" in the "Operating Mode" section.
      4. If account information is required for Internet access, enter the account information you received from your Internet service provider in the "Account Information" section,
        • or, if account information is not required for Internet access:
          • Enable the option "No" in the "Account Information" section.
      5. If a particular VLAN ID is required for Internet access, click on "Change connection settings", enable the option "Use VLAN for Internet access" in the "VLAN Settings" section, and enter the VLAN ID you received from your Internet service provider in the "VLAN ID" field.
  4. Enter the relevant speeds of your Internet connection in the "Downstream" and "Upstream" fields.
  5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Now the FRITZ!Box uses the account information you entered to establish the Internet connection. Configuration is concluded when the message "The Internet connection check was successful" is displayed.
