FRITZ!Box 7340 Service - Knowledge Base
Incorrect or unknown entries in the list of "Devices and Users"
The FRITZ!Box lists all network devices (such as computers, smartphones, game consoles) and powerline adapters known to the FRITZ!Box under "Home Network > Network > Devices and Users" in the user interface. Here the FRITZ!Box also displays all Windows users for which parental controls have been configured.
One icon indicates how the network devices are connected: for wireless devices and for devices connected to the FRITZ!Box by network cable. The icon indicates a powerline adapter; Entries for Windows users for which parental controls been configured are not displayed with an icon.
Note:If it is not clear whether a list entry is a user or a network device, then it is does not have an icon.
The FRITZ!Box displays network devices with their host names if the network devices report them to the FRITZ!Box when they obtain their IP settings via DHCP. By default, network devices that do not report their host names to the FRITZ!Box are displayed with their IP address (for example "PC-192-168-178-20") and powerline adapters are displayed with their network device names.
All network devices are displayed with their current IP address. Network devices that are not currently connected to the FRITZ!Box are displayed with their last IP address.
Since the FRITZ!Box also registers it when network devices are briefly connected using a different connection type or IP address, it may appear that network devices are listed several times or with an incorrect IP address, and/or with the incorrect connection type. Therefore, note the following information on certain entries that may appear in the "Devices and Users" list.
Note:The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for your FRITZ!Box.
1 Entry "PC-192-168-178-2" is present
2 Entry "PC-169-254-xxx-xxx" is present
Some network devices sporadically use their APIPA address 169.254.xxx.xxx to contact the FRITZ!Box when they start up or return from standby mode. Due to this, these devices are sometimes displayed in the list of "Devices and Users" with the IP addresses they obtained automatically from the FRITZ!Box, and sometimes with the name "PC-169-254-xxx-xxx" and the IP address 169.254.xxx.xxx. This is not an error on the part of the FRITZ!Box.
3 Entry with IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.255 is present
Some network devices sporadically use the broadcast address xxx.xxx.xxx.255 as their IP address (for example 192.168.178.255 if the FRITZ!Box uses the IP address 192.168.178.1 with the subnet mask 255.255.255.0) when they start up. Due to this, these devices are sometimes displayed in the list of "Devices and Users" with the IP addresses they obtained automatically from the FRITZ!Box and sometimes with the broadcast address xxx.xxx.xxx.255. This is not an error on the part of the FRITZ!Box.
4 Wireless devices without IP address are present
If unknown wireless devices are displayed in the list of "Devices and Users" that have names beginning with "PC" (for example "PC-00-23-14-DD-89-44") and do not have IP addresses:
5 Multiple entries for network device present
Network devices are listed twice in the list of "Devices and Users" if they automatically obtain their IP settings from the FRITZ!Box (DHCP client) on one occasion and on another occasion are connected to the FRITZ!Box with an IP address that was manually assigned to it. This is not an error on the part of the FRITZ!Box.
If these duplicate entries bother you, you can delete them as follows:
Configuring a network device as a DHCP client
- Configure the network device (for example the network adapter on the computer connected to the FRITZ!Box) to automatically obtain IP settings (DHCP).
Turning the network device off
- Turn off the network device that is listed more than once in the list of "Devices and Users".
Deleting a network device from the user interface
Delete all entries for the network device that is displayed more than once:
- Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Network" in the "Home Network" menu.
- Click on the "Devices and Users" tab.
- Click the (Delete) button next to the relevant network device in the list of "Devices and Users".
Restarting the FRITZ!Box
- Click "System" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Backup" in the "System" menu.
- Click on the "Restart" tab.
- Click the "Restart" button.
When you now turn the network devices on, they will only be displayed once in the list of "Devices and Users".
