Connecting FRITZ!Powerline adapters

With FRITZ!Powerline you can connect any network devices (for example a FRITZ!Box, computer or printer) with each other using your home's electrical wiring. Communication between FRITZ!Powerline adapters in the home network is encrypted with a unique network password (128-bit AES key). In order to connect FRITZ!Powerline adapters, all of the adapters must use the same network password.

Upon delivery, FRITZ!Powerline adapters from a set use the same network password. They can be used immediately right out of the box, without having to configure any additional settings.

Individual FRITZ!Powerline adapters have a unique network password upon delivery. If you want to connect them, all of the adapters must be assigned the same network password.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • You can connect up to 16 powerline adapters.

1 Connecting FRITZ!Powerline adapters from a set

Perform the following step if you are using FRITZ!Powerline adapters from a set:

  1. Plug the first FRITZ!Powerline adapter into an outlet near your router (for example FRITZ!Box).
  2. Plug the second FRITZ!Powerline adapter into an outlet near the network device (for example a computer, game console, television) that you would like to connect to the router.
    • The FRITZ!Powerline adapters connect automatically. Once the connection has been successfully established, depending on the model, either the "Powerline" LED or the "Powerline/Security" LEDs on both of the adapters remain lit. If you are using a FRITZ!Powerline 1240E that has both of these LEDS, then the "Powerline" LED remains lit.

2 Connecting individual FRITZ!Powerline adapters

In order to connect individual FRITZ!Powerline adapters or add additional FRITZ!Powerline adapters to an already existing powerline network, all of the adapters must use the same network password:

  1. Plug the FRITZ!Powerline adapter(s) into an electrical outlet.

Note:When configuring the powerline adapters, plug them into adjacent sockets so that you can connect them without having to go a long distance. As soon as they have been connected to form a network, you can plug them into the electrical outlets you would like to operate them in.

  2. On the FRITZ!Powerline adapter that is to receive the network password, push the corresponding button to initiate the reception of the network password:
    • If you have a FRITZ!Powerline adapter with a button or buttons on the base of the device:
      • Push the "Security" button for one second.
    • The "Powerline" LED on the adapter flashes.
    • If you have a FRITZ!Powerline adapter with buttons on the front of the device:
      • Push the "Powerline(/Security)" button for one second.
    • The "Powerline(/Security)" LED on the adapter flashes.
  3. Within two minutes, push the corresponding button on the FRITZ!Powerline adapter that is to transmit its network password:
    • If you have a FRITZ!Powerline adapter with a button or buttons on the base of the device:
      • Push the "Security" button for one second.
    • If you have a FRITZ!Powerline adapter with buttons on the front of the device:
      • Push the "Powerline(/Security)" button for one second.
  4. Repeat steps 1 - 3 for all other FRITZ!Powerline adapters you would like to integrate into the powerline network.
